Marion County Young Democrats
Leading up to the 2012 election, the Kentucky Young Democrats will be profiling chapters, members, and leadership so members, potential members, and supporters can see what KYD is all about.
In April 2009, months after President Obama took office as President of the United States, a group of young people joined together for the first time in Marion County under the direction of Chad G. Mattingly. With the energy and excitement of many young people across the nation, the Marion County Young Democrats quickly became a recognizable organization within the KYD and has remained committed ever since. Marion County is far from a large group in comparison to some, but what we lack in numbers, we make up for in heart.
Since its inception, the MCYD’s have been active in political and philanthropic affairs alike. The group played an integral part in the election of Terry Mills and Terry Rakes for State Representative and Marion County PVA, respectively. During the 2012 KYD State Convention, hosted in Marion County for the first time, the MCYD worked together with KYD’s across the state to donate hundreds of dollars of supplies to The Caring Place, a local shelter providing a safe place for abused women and children. In addition, we have donated time and funds to local elementary schools, Christmas Angels, Wreaths Across America, and Girls on the Run.
When asked why they joined, one member referenced the group’s mission statement by saying the Marion County Young Democrats exists to make Marion County a better place to live, learn, and do business; and to support groups and Democratic candidates that will do the same. Another said, “I joined to be able to improve the quality of life for my fellow man; to have the ability to make an impact in local, county, and state government.”
Whether it’s the monthly meetings, local or state campaigns, riding the float at Ham Days, or the occasional pig roast, the Marion County Young Democrats enjoy being together with each other and other young democrats across the state. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the Kentucky Young Democrats organization for their commitment and dedication to us, and Democrats across the state. We’re honored to be a part of the KYD.
